What Is CPS? Clicks Per Second Explained for Beginners
What is CPS and how is it measured? A beginner's guide to clicks per second: the math, the rating ladders, the techniques, and why the number matters.
CPS stands for clicks per second — how many times you can click a mouse button or press a key in one second. It’s the standard measure of click speed in gaming communities, the score on every “click speed test” site, and the stat every PvP player quotes in lobbies. This is the beginner’s guide: what the number means, how it’s measured, and what you can honestly expect from your own hand.
The math is simple
CPS = total clicks ÷ elapsed seconds. Click 70 times in 10 seconds and you’ve scored 7 CPS. Click 12 times in 1 second and you’ve scored 12 CPS. That’s the entire formula — everything else is about the conditions of the measurement.
CPM (clicks per minute) is the same number scaled up: 7 CPS is 420 CPM. Long tests often quote CPM because the numbers feel more familiar.
What a good score looks like
The rating ladder used across the community — and on this site — runs:
- Turtle 0–3 CPS
- Beginner 3–5
- Average 5–7
- Fast 7–9
- Pro 9–11
- Elite 11–14
- Inhuman 14+

Techniques change the number

No technique is “better” than the others in every way — each trades speed against strain, consistency and server acceptance. The Mode Tester measures whether you’re performing each one correctly, with per-technique accuracy metrics.
What the number does NOT tell you
- It’s not a personality test. A low score means untrained hand, not slow brain.
- 1-second scores are bursts, not skills. A 12 CPS burst says nothing about your 10-second average.
- It’s hardware-influenced. Button travel, switch weight and screen response all shift scores. Comparing different setups is approximate at best.
- Servers cap it. Hypixel registers about 13 CPS maximum — beyond that, raw speed is cosmetic in PvP there.
Where to start
Run the 10-second CPS test — three times, take the best. That’s your honest baseline. If it’s below 7, rhythm work (metronome drills) moves it fastest. If it’s above 9, you’re in competitive territory, and technique training is the next lever.
