Butterfly Clicking Tutorial: Two Fingers, Double Your CPS

Ishan Sahu · Founder & Developer 3 min read 565 words

The complete butterfly clicking tutorial: grip, alternation technique, alternation rate, common mistakes, mouse choice and a 14-day practice plan.

Butterfly clicking is the best speed-per-effort technique in click gaming: it roughly doubles your output by alternating two fingers between the left and right mouse buttons, and it does it without the arm strain of jitter. This tutorial takes you from zero to a clean 12+ CPS alternation — and the butterfly tester measures whether you’re really doing it.

What butterfly clicking is

Place one finger on the left mouse button, another on the right. Click left-right-left-right as fast as you can. Because each button re-arms while the other is pressed, the two clicks overlap — that overlap is where the doubling comes from. A 7 CPS single finger becomes 12–16 CPS butterfly in a few weeks.

Step 1: The grip

  • Index finger on the left button, middle finger on the right. Left-handed players mirror this.
  • Both fingers rest ON the buttons before you start. Hovering kills the overlap.
  • The palm stays planted — only the fingers move. If your whole hand shifts, you’re tensing too hard.

Step 2: The alternation

Start slow. Click left, right, left, right at a metronome pace — even 3 CPS. The rhythm is everything: each button must release before the next press, and the two fingers should feel like a rocking motion, not two separate tappers.

The alternation rate is the metric that tells you if you’re doing this right: it’s the share of consecutive clicks that switched buttons. Above 80% is a true butterfly. Below 60%, you’re mostly clicking one button — one wing, not a butterfly. The tester shows this number on every run.

Step 3: Common mistakes

  1. Favoring one finger. Almost everyone does this. Fix: deliberately over-drive the weak finger during warm-up — fifty exaggerated swaps before every session.
  2. Clicking too hard. Pressure kills rhythm. The fingers should barely touch the buttons.
  3. Chasing speed before alternation. A fast one-wing score is a single-finger score wearing a costume. Fix the 80% alternation first; speed follows automatically.

Step 4: Mouse choice

Button travel is the hardware variable. Short-travel buttons re-arm faster and allow higher alternation speeds; wide button plates give both fingers room. Most serious butterfly players test 2–3 mice before settling — and yes, the difference is real, typically 1–3 CPS.

The 14-day plan

  • Days 1–4: grip + metronome alternation at 3–5 CPS. Ten 5-second runs per session, alternation rate is the only score.
  • Days 5–9: raise the pace to 6–8 CPS. Start watching raw CPS. If alternation drops below 70%, drop the pace.
  • Days 10–14: full-speed 10-second runs. The alternation rate should hold 80%+; if it doesn’t, the rhythm isn’t muscle memory yet — return to metronome work.

What results look like

Week Typical 10s CPS Alternation rate
Start (single finger) 6–8
Day 7 8–10 60–75%
Day 14 10–13 80%+
Month 2 12–16 85%+

Every run lands on your Personal Best chart automatically, so you can watch both numbers trend — speed and form — without writing anything down.

One honest note: on Hypixel the effective cap is about 13 CPS, so a clean 12–13 butterfly is the efficient target for PvP there. Beyond the cap, speed is cosmetic — form is not. Start the butterfly test now.
