Visual Reaction Time Benchmarks

Human Baseline: ~273 ms
Godlike <170 ms

Superhuman reaction speed. Esports professional reflexes.

Pro 170–210 ms

Blazing fast reflexes. Well above typical human baseline.

Fast 210–260 ms

Quick visual reactions. Competitive gaming standard.

Average 260–310 ms

Standard median human reaction time (~273ms).

Slow 310–400 ms

Slightly delayed reflexes. Focus on the instant color change.

Sluggish >400 ms

Delayed response. Check for hardware input lag or distractions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a good reaction time?

The median human visual reaction time is around 250–273 milliseconds. Scores under 200 ms are considered fast (typical of competitive gamers and athletes), while reaction times under 170 ms are in the top tier of human reflex speed.

How does the reaction time test work?

When you click to start, the test enters a waiting state with a randomized delay between 1.5 and 4.0 seconds. As soon as the screen flashes green, a high-resolution timer (performance.now()) starts and measures the exact milliseconds until your click or keypress registers.

Why does the benchmark use 5 rounds?

A single trial is susceptible to anticipation errors or momentary lapses in attention. Averaging 5 consecutive trials smooths out statistical noise and provides an honest, reliable measurement of your true visual response latency.

Does my monitor or mouse affect my reaction time score?

Yes. Hardware latency matters: standard 60Hz monitors add roughly 16.6ms of frame delay compared to ~4.1ms on a 240Hz gaming display. Wireless interference, TV processing lag, and deep-travel keyboard switches can also add 10–50ms to your measured score.

Can reaction time be improved with training?

Yes. While biological reflex ceilings exist, deliberate focus drills, consistent sleep, hydration, and gaming practice can reduce response latency by 15–40 ms by optimizing visual stimulus recognition and neuromuscular priming.
